Despite the worst conditions in years, Miramonte shined big time at the NCS championships today at Hayward High School. The day’s races involved warming up in pouring rain, sliding on mud, some falling, puddles to run through or around and running fast in the process! The first 5 of 7 runners per Varsity team are the ones who earn points for the team. The less points you have, the better.

The girls started off at 11:10am, with top competition coming from Acalanes, Las Lomas, Redwood and Bishop O’Dowd. The rain had just stopped before the girls went off, but the course was very muddy and even more challenging. All of our girls performed well against the toughest competition in our league and all Divisions, finishing 6th overall. Senior and Captain Ariel Thomas was our first Mat, with a 19th overall finish. Our 4 other scorers were Sophomore Sarah Rockwood #23, Junior Andrea Tamminga 27th, Junior Lindsay Buckel 37th and Jr. Camille Anderson 42nd. Sophomores Sondra Abruzzo and Senior Ashley Kawaguchi rounded out our 7 Varsity. There were 112 runners and 15 teams in this race.

The boys ran at 12:50pm, and even though the rain had stopped, the course was a mess and the boys were covered in mud (as were the girls). We had 3 boys in the top 10—Senior and Captain Tyler Hanson—3rd, Senior Dillon Read—8th and Senior Jimmy McFeely—9th; Senior Mark Tamminga #14 and Junior Charlie Zamanian #24 helped secure a #1 for Miramonte! Yes, #1 overall!!!! Junior Miles McCaulou and Sophomore Dennis Finger rounded out the 7 boys. Miramonte boys haven’t won an NCS championships since 2001! There were 132 runners and 20 teams in this race.

We are now State-bound, on Nov. 24th at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Go Mats!
